Nature of Incident

In-person harrassment, slurs or threats of violence

Hi I writing to complain about one of the staff from Boston Public library in Copley Plaza. She told me told me that I was disturbing her and others because of my conversation with a fellow medical student on skype (I was speaking in spanish in moderate low tone in an area that is designed to share knowledge openly, the Johnson building has a poster that tells people that they can talk and express themselves with no need to quiet down). I was a gentleman about it and terminated the conversation and moved to another place away from her to finish my medical case discussion. When I finished the conversation I approached her and told her to forgive me for \"disturbing\" her and I told her \"I thought I could talk and share knowledge in the Johnson building (as I had seen in a poster yesterday).\" She got defensive and told me that the policy is that if I am disturbing others that she has the right to silence me otherwise tell the librarian guards to remove me from the library. I felt compelled by this and left the area. I go to this library everyday to study for my medical boards and I am a very quiet and low profile person. I do not look to make problems but I felt discriminated because I see people everyday talking in the Johnson building and even tutoring and I have never seen anyone complaining about it. Actually the library is too big to make a deal out of it and the McKim buidling next to the buidling I mentioned is designed for quiet individualized studying. I am totally sure she was annoyed because I was speaking in spanish which is by nature racist. I can speak in the language I please. I reported this to the BPL director and I'm still awaiting a reply.
