I went to a concert today and was in the front section close to the stage. It is a crowded, standing room only section. I am of South East Asian ethnic origin, and the only POC around at the time. (Concert goers were predominantly Caucasian; I saw maybe 2 other POC besides myself the entire night.) A young blonde Woman was enjoying the music next to me. She was looking for her boyfriend and trying to locate him in the crowdand let him know where she was. She turned her friend and said she knew how to find him. She then put her hand to her mouth and let out a Native American war cry. She said her friend \"he\'ll know it\'s me.\" I was shocked to hear and see someone do this, considering we are in an area of Washington state where there are multiple tribes and reservations nearby. Over the music I said \"I think that\'s racially insensitive.\" No one around me said anything. I repeated myself in her direction and said \"that\'s racially insensitive.\" She said \"I know, but…\" I said \"don\'t do that.\" She said \"I know but it\'s how my boyfriend and I find each other.\" I said to her \"That\'s cute that you have a way to find each other, but don\'t do that again. It\'s racially insensitive.\" She said \"I\'m sorry\" and we both went back to enjoying the music. While it was not directly making a mockery of my culture, I was still upset because it was mocking Native Americans — they have suffered enough. She knew what she was doing was wrong but still did it. In addition, she was using an actual war cry that represented something very specific, as a little gesture between her and her boyfriend. It not only perpetuates disrespect and racism, but reinforces false stereotypes that have plagued Native peoples forever by Caucasian people. I felt the need to say something because I do not tolerate racism and I knew no one else around me was going to take the time to correct her or even think about how wrong her action was. We all have to make a real effort to respect each other as people and educate one another about cultural differences.
